Corporate Diwali Gifting: Why Handcrafted Beats the Dry Fruit Box

Most corporate Diwali gifts are forgotten within a week. Handcrafted beeswax candles work differently: they stay on a shelf, they get talked about, and they say something about the sender's judgement. Budget tiers, timelines and customisation options.

Corporate Diwali Gifting: Why Handcrafted Beats the Dry Fruit Box

Every year from about mid-August, the same question starts arriving in Wickory's inbox, phrased slightly differently each time. Someone has been handed the Diwali gifting budget, they have four hundred people to send something to, and they do not want to send the dry fruit box again.

I understand the instinct. The dry fruit box is safe. It is also the gift most likely to be quietly re-gifted before the week is out.

The problem with the safe option

Corporate Diwali gifting in India is not a small line item. The India gifting market was valued at around USD 816 million in 2025 according to IMARC Group, and the festive season accounts for a substantial share of annual corporate gifting spend. That is a lot of money moving through a category where most recipients cannot remember what they received the year before.

The reason is structural, not budgetary. Dry fruits, sweet boxes and branded desk accessories are all bought on the same logic: minimise risk, maximise count, get it delivered. Nobody objects to them. Nobody remembers them either. The gift does the job of being sent without ever doing the job of being received.

A handcrafted object works differently. It stays on a desk or a shelf. It gets used slowly. And because someone clearly made it by hand, it carries an implicit statement about how the sender thinks about quality, which is the entire point of client gifting.

What actually changes with handcrafted

Three things, in our experience of fulfilling bulk Diwali orders.

It survives the first week. A box of sweets has a lifespan of days. A beeswax candle sits on a shelf through winter, and every time it is lit the sender gets remembered. That is a very different return on the same spend.

It gives the recipient something to say. People ask about a hand-sculpted candle in a way they do not ask about a hamper. If the gift is going to a client, that conversation is doing work for you.

It signals judgement. Gifting is one of the few moments where a company's taste is visible to people outside it. A generic hamper says the budget was spent. Something made by hand says somebody thought about it.

The wider case, beyond Diwali, is in Candles as Corporate Gifts: What Works and What Doesn't.

Choosing by tier, not by headcount

The most common mistake in corporate Diwali gifting is sending one thing to everybody. Different relationships call for different weight, and the budget stretches much further when it is tiered.

Large-volume employee gifting. For teams of a hundred or more, the practical range sits between ₹250 and ₹700 per person. Beeswax wax sachets work well here. They are imprinted with festive motifs, come with a ribbon loop, cost very little to ship, and still look like an object rather than a commodity. See the Wax Sachets collection, from the Teen Patti Wax Sachet at ₹249, or a 3.5 inch Glittering Urli at ₹299 from The Diwali Edit.

Mid-tier employee and partner gifting. Between ₹800 and ₹1,500, a layered jar candle in borosilicate glass gives you something with real shelf presence. This is the range most companies settle on for the bulk of their list. The Café Aura (from ₹699) and La Vie en Rose (₹1,299) are the usual picks.

Client and leadership gifting. Above ₹2,000, hand-sculpted floral pieces become viable, such as The Blossom Bear Bouquet (₹2,499) and The Secret Garden (₹2,999). These are the gifts that go to the twenty relationships that actually matter, and they should not look like the same thing everyone else got. More in Floral Bouquets, and why they get kept rather than binned is in Candle Bouquets: Flowers That Don't Die.

For individual gifts rather than a company list, the same range is laid out by budget in Diwali Candle Gifts for Every Budget.

One tax point worth knowing: under the Income Tax Rules, non-cash gifts to employees up to ₹5,000 in a financial year are exempt from perquisite tax. Most corporate Diwali gifting sits comfortably below that line, but it is worth confirming with your finance team if you are gifting at the senior end.

Why beeswax specifically

Beeswax is a more expensive material than paraffin or soy, and for a corporate gift that matters, because the recipient can tell. Every Wickory piece is made with a natural beeswax blend, with no paraffin. Beeswax has a natural honey scent that comes from the wax itself, and at a comparable size and wick it typically burns longer than paraffin. The material itself is explained in Beeswax Candles: What They Are and Why They Burn Differently.

It also photographs well, which sounds trivial until you consider that a good proportion of corporate gifts end up on someone's Instagram story. And if the office itself needs dressing for the festival of lights, our Diwali styling guide covers urlis and layered candles for a reception desk as much as a dining table.

Timing, which is the part people get wrong

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with Dhanteras on 6 November. Handcrafted means made one at a time, and that sets a real production limit.

For orders of 200 units or more, allow at least five weeks before your delivery date. For 500 or more, allow seven to eight weeks. Personalised packaging or custom colour matching adds another one to two weeks on top. Companies that come to us in the last week of October can usually be helped with smaller quantities, but the range narrows sharply. Standard dispatch and delivery times are on the shipping and delivery page.

If you are comparing options, start vendor conversations six to eight weeks out and lock final quantities three to four weeks out. That is the rhythm that works.

What we can customise

For bulk and corporate Diwali orders, Wickory can adjust packaging with your branding, match colours to a brand palette or an event theme, design occasion-specific pieces, and ship across India. There is no minimum order quantity, and pricing per piece improves with volume; quotes are shared through the corporate gifting page, or you can reach us directly through the contact page. The same approach carries into December, covered in our Christmas and New Year gift guide.

The dry fruit box will always be available. It will also always be forgotten. If this is the year you want the gift to actually land, handcrafted is the shortest route there.

FAQ

What is a good budget for corporate Diwali gifts in India?
For large employee lists, ₹250 to ₹700 per person is practical. Mid-tier employee and partner gifting works well at ₹800 to ₹1,500. Client and leadership gifts typically sit above ₹2,000. Tiering by relationship stretches the budget much further than sending one item to everyone.

When should companies place bulk Diwali gift orders?
Start vendor selection six to eight weeks before Diwali and confirm final quantities three to four weeks out. For handcrafted orders above 500 units, allow seven to eight weeks. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.

Is there a minimum order for corporate candle gifts?
No. Wickory has no minimum order quantity, so a team of ten can order the same pieces as a company of five hundred. Pricing per piece improves as volumes go up, and quotes are shared through the corporate gifting page.

Are corporate gifts taxable for employees in India?
Non-cash gifts up to ₹5,000 per employee per financial year are exempt from perquisite tax under the Income Tax Rules. Above that, the full value becomes taxable. Confirm treatment with your finance team.

Can candles be branded for corporate gifting?
Yes. Packaging can carry your branding, and colours can be matched to a brand palette or event theme. The candle itself is left unbranded so it stays something the recipient wants to keep.

Why choose handcrafted over standard corporate hampers?
A handcrafted object has a longer life on a desk or shelf, gives the recipient something to talk about, and signals judgement in a way a mass-produced hamper cannot. The difference is whether the gift is merely sent or actually received.
